coLAB studio completes our first art project in Hawaii! /
Shadows change throughout the afternoon, culminating in clarity late in the day.
Two days after the installation, and a morning after surfing, Matthew of colab goes back to inspect the work. That is coLAB's proper office attire while working on Maui, in case you were wondering.

The plaza is complete and the stage was set for the first event under the canopy.
This little girl provided one of the drawings to be transformed into the final artwork. Her mom told me she'd never won anything before, and that this was a life high-light for her. You can see the pride on her face to be a part of the project. Maybe my favorite photo ever.

And the final artwork in the station itself. The images are of architectural projects designed for Phoenix that never happened, such as this one of Frank Lloyd Wright's Arizona State Capitol Building. Maybe it got built in an alternative world...

Intermediate painted panels of desert purple will occur at random intervals.
The first house, on the right, had yellow-green vertical stripes. Both colors were carefully chosen to work well with fully rusted panels.
The interior is nearing completion as well. Doors and windows are installed. Gypsum Board is getting textured (smooth, of course).

What? coLAB studio is making pink stucco houses?
No. Not at all. This is an advanced weather barrier that is fluid applied to the exterior sheathing. Its part of the building technology system we use to make the insulation much more effective. This house's AC system uses very little power, which enables us to have a 1680 SF home net-zero with just over a 3 kWh photovoltaic system.
Applying blow-in cellulose insulation. 100% recycled content and more effective than conventional insulation. Much less prickly to work with too. And all the "waste" you see on the floor can be swept up and put back into the blower, so there is ZERO waste!

Our research has (finally) been published within a book about sprawl. /
University of Georgia Press has published this collection of essays and case studies about retrofitting sprawl. And research by Matthew Salenger of colab studio is in it! You can see more about the research and art-publication associated with it under "Individualocracy" in the projects section of colab's website.
More progress at Dunlap Venue (19th Ave & Dunlap) /
Much of the paving and seating is now in place. Waiting for the landscaping, which should really make the plaza come to life. I'm also curious to see how the colored concrete comes out. The first color they've put in isn't showing up much, but it hasn't been cleaned and sealed yet. However, the shade from the canopy has a really nice balance to it. Not solid- but feels cooler under it.
I love the shadow patterns on the ground.

The structure is complete. Gabion seating is partially installed. Paving next- then landscaping.
